Home Literature The Neo-Pagan Drift
By Thomas Wang
In America today, a gigantic force is advancing swiftly and cunningly among every walk of life (including some Christian churches). We call this devastating impetus the Neo-Pagan Drift.
If there be a day that America should decline and fall, it would not be due to enemy missiles or nuclear attack from the outside, but because of this neo-pagan drift from within America herself!
While America is spending trillions of dollars in national defense, it is now a most critical time for her to go through a nation-wide self-examination, under the search light of the Spirit of God on her national purpose, integrity and allegiance to Jesus Christ!
"For My people have committed two sins: they have forsaken Me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water." (Jere.2:13)
What a striking similarity there is between Israel in Jeremiah's time and America today. America is forsaking God, and digging her own cisterns! The whole nation is overwhelmed and overshadowed by the dead weight of the drift towards neo-paganism.
One of the least used rooms in the mansion of the U. S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. is the Congressional Prayer Room! According to a reporter for a major newspaper who made a whole-day observation there, while both chambers of Congress were in session, not a single Senator or Representative came to the room for "private meditation and prayer" for which the room was designed. What a pity that today's leaders of America have ignored the fountain of blessings, the source of wisdom and the foundation of strength, by which their forefathers established this beloved nation.
There is a special place in God's heart which He gives to the rulers of a nation who would submit themselves and walk humbly with Him. This has been true since the Old Testament time! God will bless a whole nation on account of her rulers' God-fearing attitude.
We hereby humbly make a suggestion that the United States President, Vice-President, members of the Congress, the Supreme Court Justices would set aside 15 minutes each day from their busy schedule to come humbly before the Almighty God, to pray for the forgiveness of their own sins, and sins of their people, to pray for Divine guidance and wisdom to discharge the tremendous responsibilities, with which they have been entrusted and to make intercession for the nation and the world.
Leaders of the United States must come back to God! That old-time religion has to be once again accepted, honored, and practiced in the United States Capitol and by her people.
This is the thing that will surely save America!
The fact that the Supreme Court of the United States threw prayer and Bible reading out of our public schools half of a century ago was a most ruinous act! A decision such as this, made by the highest judicial office of the country has far reaching and deadly consequences.
Look at the schools today; young minds are being fed by atheistic and pagan teachings; religious faith is being laughed at; immorality, drugs and drunkenness have become common practices! And yet, the very least epression of reverence to God has been banned – not by an atheistic or totalitarian power, but by the Supreme Court of a Christian democratic nation, whose very foundation was based on Christian faith!
People no more have to turn around and wonder at the ever-increasing rate of crimes, unwed mothers and killings of the unborn! What prompted the leaders, legislatures and judges to come up with policies as such are the profoundest mysteries! Should this continue, soon the opening prayers of the Senate and the House, the laying of hand on the Bible for presidents to take their oath of office, the chaplaincy of the armed forces, the inscription, "In God We Trust" on our coins and banknotes, and the existence of religious books in public libraries, will all be declared" unconstitutional." Let us be reminded that high above the Constitution of the United States is the CONSTITUTION of God which governs the whole universe! Dare we tamper with it! If prayer and Bible reading in our public schools are “unconstitutional”, then our Constitution is unconstitutional under the Sovereign God!
Let us not forget how America was founded! Let.us provoke no further the wrath of the Almighty – if we still believe there is such a One! Let us come before Him and repent! Let the American people, like the early apostles, have the courage to say to their wayward leaders: "We must obey God rather than men!" (Acts 5:29)
Higher education today serves only to build up an apology for atheism. Christian young people today continually confront human theories against the Bible; Darwin's Evolution or God's Creation? We are not leading our young people to God through our current educational system. We naively say, "Let them choose for themselves. They know what's best for them." You don't let your children choose between a bottle of milk and a bottle of poison without doing something about it, do you? Our educational systems should be operated on a God-honoring basis. The knowledge and faith in God should be taught to students starting from kindergarten.
More and more "Christians" are turning to psychiatrists rather than their pastors for counseling and help. (It is also true that some ministers themselves no longer believe in prayer.) Churches today are fading out of people's everyday lives. Because of her conformity to this world, people no longer respect the church or go to her for help in time of spiritual needs or real-life crisis.
If America forsakes God, she will suffer severe judgment from Him, because she has been raised, and brought up by God. It is simply unnatural for America to say there is no God! But the cruel fact is: America today IS forsaking God! The older generations are gone – and with them, the old-time religion and the "faith of our fathers!" The new crop of men and women today, while enjoying the fruit of the labors of their God-fearing forefathers, do not know or stop to think how prosperity came about? They do not see the need for God. Why bother about God at all when they can enjoy good food, television, and mindless entertainment!
In view of the rampant spreading of homosexual behavior today, Billy Graham once said, "If God does not judge America, He may have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah!"
After the death of Moses and Joshua, later generations of lsrael people began to drift in Canaan: "The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that He did for Israel..."
"And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which He had done for Israel."
"And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim." (Judges 2:7, 10, 11)
The above verses in the book of Judges fit our present picture perfectly if we substitute the words "America" for "Israel" and “money" for “Baalim".
The current generation of America must be told! The "great works" of God must be re-proclaimed among the American people, especially to the younger generations. Here are the similarities between the "great works" which God had done to the Israelites in the Old Testament time and to the American people throughout her history: (Please see chart)
Israelites |
Americans |
1. God led them out of oppression and slavery from Egypt. |
1. God led them out of oppression and tyranny from many nations. |
2. God led them through the Red Sea, the wilderness and the River Jordan. |
2. God led them through many lands, countries, and oceans. |
3. There were difficulties and casualties on their way out but God led them through. |
3. There were also difficulties and casualties on their way out but God led them through. |
4. They had to conquer their new land. God helped them and they did. |
4. They also had to conquer their new land. God helped them and they did. |
5. God made their nation "a land flowing with milk and honey." |
5. God also made their nation "a land flowing with milk and honey." |
6. They were God-loving, God-fearing people during their first few generations. |
6. They were also God-loving, God-fearing people during the first part of their history. |
7. Theirs was a nation of theocracy – God was their ruler. |
7. Theirs is a nation of democracy, and they acknowledge God in their Constitution. |
8. Their new generations began to forsake God. |
8. Their recent generations also began to forsake God. |
9. They worshipped heathen gods and idols. |
9. They are worshipping: Money, fame, power, and sinful pleasure and indulging in cults, superstitions, paganism, etc. |
10. They were unruly, "every man did that which was right in his own eyes." (Judges 21:25) |
10. They have too much freedom. It is abused. Sin increased. |
11. They had moral corruption. |
11. They also have moral corruption. |
13. God sent His prophets and judges to warn and to deliver them. |
13. God is sending many of His servants to warn them. Much of her judicial system has rebelled against God. |
14. They were finally put under judgment – foreign captivity! |
14. If America does not repent, if her leaders do not come back to God, if they do not purge their social evils, if they do not abolish their atheistic educational svstem, if her courts keep on outlawing things like prayer and Bible reading in schools, they will suffer a judgment more severe than what the Israelites went through – because they have been warned more and they know better! |
15. While in captivity, they repented and cried out unto God (Psalm 137). God heard their cry and restored them. |
15. We wish that they would never have to go under judgment by repenting early. |
